Day 2 - His Love Is Much More Powerful Than Sin

Rom 5:6-9 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

 How big is God’s love? It’s greater than we can imagine, but in an effort to communicate its depth, the apostle Paul paints a picture that helps us get a glimpse of it. This passage describes the willingness of a person to sacrifice his own life for another. Someone might do this if the other person is “righteous” or even “good,” and we see heroic examples of this from time to time.

But God goes much further. When Jesus came to the earth, mankind was lost in sin. And it was more than just our actions; sin was actually a part of man’s identity (Rom 7:17). And because of this sin, we were all headed toward the Day of Judgement – without a leg to stand on – to receive the judgement we actually deserved. This is the “wrath of God” – His anger toward sin.

You see, God is entirely holy – (1Jn 1:5). And holiness and sin can’t coexist. So the concept of God having anything to do with sin or evil is absurd – dark and light don’t mix. This is a concept repeated throughout the Old and New Testaments.

Yet because of His great love, He chose to make us alive together with Him (Eph 2:1-5). And giving us this life cost Jesus His own. Not only did He die on a cross, but He took the sin of the entire world on Himself, which caused Him to be separated from God the Father. Jesus was separated from His Father so we could be reunited with Him.

He did Much More than we can imagine. Why did He do this? Love.

He demonstrates His love by justifying us from sin – making it as if we are entirely innocent. And the point of this passage is that justification is not simply a theoretical or legal issue, it is very real. Because of the blood of Jesus, we are innocent in the eternal scheme of things. And the result of this is that we have been saved from the wrath – the judgement – of God.

However guilty we were, He made us Much More innocent so we can be in true relationship with Him forever.

This is a huge deal, because it means we get to spend eternity with God.
